The Issue
In the client’s own words:
“I needed to find ways to overcome what I saw as barriers to making more of my experience and be more influential at work.”
“I knew I had more that I could bring to the table, but I didn’t know how best to do that — and as a result I felt I was spinning my wheels a bit, and stagnating.”
The Process
The client had spent their career trying to emulate more senior colleagues’ behaviour in order to advance to more senior roles.
This worked for a while — but it eventually made it difficult to be assertive in meetings because it led to my client feeling inauthentic.
We therefore worked on helping my client to find ways of taking initiative and sharing their experience in ways that felt natural and that aligned with their values.
We analysed what worked well for my client, what landed best with colleagues and stakeholders, and also examined how to improve things when experiments with new ways of working were less successful.
We also dedicated some coaching sessions to addressing how to best navigate challenging workplace dynamics during a tumultuous period.
The Outcome
At first, the client was sceptical about the coaching process: they had hoped I would feed them the answers to their questions, and provide quick fixes to these longstanding challenges.
But soon, the client felt empowered by the coaching process, and developed confidence as I helped them analyse their situation more deeply and from new angles, and challenged them to test out new ways of working best adapted to their unique career path.
In the client’s own words:
“Working with Jon has given me the confidence to make myself heard and stay true to my values at work, which leads to more job satisfaction and less dwelling on problems. I am more fulfilled because I have greater confidence to take on certain tasks and be more implicated in projects that interest me.”
“Coaching challenged me to adopt different ways of thinking. I found coaching valuable because it allowed me to change the way I worked and thought about work while still staying true to my personality, my gut instincts, and my defining characteristics.”
“In other words, [coaching] wasn’t about turning me into someone new, but finding the parts of me that were less visible or could be better exploited to reach my goals.”
