Coaching for lawyers, by a former lawyer
The Challenge
I am a former lawyer, and I work almost exclusively with lawyers. That matters, because it means I understand the unique characteristics and demands of the profession—I know what sets you apart.
Practising law has always been demanding, but today’s rapidly-evolving legal market has made the profession more challenging than ever. Recruiting and retaining young talent is becoming increasingly complex, client needs are in constant evolution, and new competitors in novel configurations enter the market every day.
As a result, success depends more than ever on the ability to adapt in response to these changes.
The Solution
Coaching supports lawyers in developing the skills necessary for this fundamental work, by helping lawyers to develop and maintain a razor-sharp ability to continually question and improve their approach to business and work.
Coaching works thanks to its bespoke approach: the client plays an active, central role in the process. The coach guides the lawyer as he or she takes stock of their current situation so that they can gain an in-depth understanding of what needs to change and why. Based on this analysis, the coach helps the lawyer to develop new working methods and implement the changes necessary to achieve their most ambitious goals.
When the client experiences a setback, the coach helps them to understand why — thus minimising the risk that it happens again.
At the end of the coaching process, the client has not only mastered new ways of working, but has also developed the ability and habit of continuously analysing and refining these going forward. As a result, the lawyer is ready to meet whatever challenges present themselves down the road.
Targeted support for professional growth
I work with lawyers on a wide range of issues related to advancing and succeeding in the profession. Typical topics for coaching include:
A systematic framework for success
Continuous development is a systemic process; improving issues in one area will naturally touch upon many others. That’s one reason why coaching succeeds where many other approaches fail: I work with my clients not only to help them improve on areas they have identified, but to help them understand how these evolutions are related to other aspects of their work.
Organisation of sessions
I work with most of my clients for six months, and we typically meet for about an hour once every two weeks. Here is what a typical coaching engagement looks like:
Sessions 1–2
Establishment of objectives
If relevant, one session can include the participation of a supervising lawyer, in order to take into account their views on areas of focus for coaching.
Sessions 3–7
Analysis of current working methods
Development of new ways of working
If relevant, a session at the halfway point can include the participation of a supervising lawyer, in order to have input on progress made up to that point.
Sessions 8–12
Analysis and refinement of new ways of working
Development of a roadmap to anticipate future challenges and avoid setbacks
The coaching engagement can include a debriefing session with a supervising lawyer, if applicable.
A proven track record
My clients have achieved numerous promotions, improved their relationships with colleagues, found a new sense of meaning and direction in their careers, and developed healthier attitudes towards work that allow them to reconnect with their loved ones and enjoy more productive relationships with their colleagues.
Since I have started working with Jon, I have not only been promoted twice; I have renewed my enjoyment in my job and my motivation to continue in it. I feel more confident that if I want to take on more responsibility, I would enjoy that and would be able to find a path to get there. My work/life balance has improved: I have better, more collegial working relationships at almost every level, which means that I’m not worrying about work all the time and I am able to be more present when I am with my family and enjoy my time with them more.
