The Issue

A client had recently joined a team where a number of colleagues exhibited unhealthy behaviours. They came to me to strategise setting boundaries and succeeding in a tough environment.

The Process

We identified overall goals for our work together, and also identified some red lines: when unhealthy behaviours in the team went beyond these, it would be time to alert HR, develop an exit strategy, or both.

Within each session, we approached each issue as it arose: every week seemed to present a new challenge — which was also the opportunity to develop new strategies in response.

In the client’s own words:
“You were really good at asking tough questions to help me think more deeply about what was happening, and what I wanted to get out of this job specifically and my career more broadly.”

“Our coaching sessions felt like a very psychologically safe space, which contrasted a lot with my team. Your background as a lawyer also made me feel more reassured about confidentiality.”

“You helped me to think critically about the root cause of various issues, and challenged both my assumptions and some of the routines I had gotten into.”

“In doing so, you helped me to think more deeply about the situation. That helped me to piece together what was happening, and draw on previous experiences to develop healthy responses to the situation around me.”

The Outcome

“I feel much better-placed to navigate challenging group dynamics and challenging people. I feel more in tune with my values, and am no longer afraid to explain what I think is a manageable workload, or my preferred ways of working.”
