The Issue
A lawyer sought out coaching to address areas for improvement that their supervising partner had raised in their annual review.
The Process
First, we worked to develop precise goals based on the partner’s feedback. We then identified priority areas for improvement, as well as a list of indicators of success so that the client would be able to assess on a continuous basis whether they were on the right track.
Over the course of the year, sessions alternated between short-term and long-term work.
The short-term work involved addressing specific challenges as they arose in day-to-day work.
The work on these short-term issues naturally contributed to the long-term work.
The Outcome
Coaching sessions provided a much-needed opportunity to focus on the long term by periodically taking a step back from the endless flow of urgent issues to assess progress against milestones for the client’s overarching goals and to identify growth opportunities.
The client developed a renewed sense of purpose at work, and found it increasingly enjoyable. They earned accolades for exceeding expectations at the following annual review, and continued to develop a strong reputation across the firm.
