Chief Digital Officer, Retail Company
The Issue
A client was starting their first C-suite role in a new company. My client needed to develop their identity as a leader, and carve out a space in a company with a unique culture.
The Process
At the outset, we set overarching goals, which guided our work together. Then, challenges that came up from week to week provided the material for my client to analyse and build their identity as a leader based on specific milestones within these broader goals.
In my client’s own words:
“I, like many people, was trained to show up in a certain way based on my education, where I grew up, my training, and the workplaces, as well as colleagues and managers who shaped me early in my career. I fell into a path of fitting into that mould.”
“I realised that in order to be an effective colleague, professional and leader, I needed to have the courage to bring my true self to work — which may sound cliché, but it’s a lot easier said than done.”
“I've been working on finding joy, fulfilment, and purpose at work; being more adaptable and context-specific in how I show up at work, instead of adopting a one-size-fits-all approach to leadership. This also involved a bit of unlearning and learning, after having spent over a decade in a company with a notoriously strong culture.”
“Jon is really good at holding space, being deeply reflective, and allowing me to be independent in my expressions and thinking, while at the same time stepping in to challenge in certain moments to remind me of my intentions.”
“Jon gave me the time and space to figure things out for myself and to come to conclusions on my own, while giving me much-needed nudges and pushes where relevant to hold me accountable and serve as an objective sounding board.”
The Outcome
“Coaching helped me to gain clarity in my self-awareness and awareness of others, which helped me to develop healthier and more constructive mindsets for whatever professional situations I find myself in.”
“Today, I am more compassionate and kind towards others. I am showing up more confidently and securely, which includes being less judgmental. I am more aware of my values and what I bring to the table. I no longer feel the need to prove myself, to mark my presence or to justify my role.”
