Workshop

Succeeding as a mid-level associate

Mid-level associates in large law firms are in a crucial phase in their professional development (one I have written about here): it is a period of significant change and rapidly increasing responsibility. Successfully navigating this period is essential to future success.

Partners expect mid-level associates to make contributions beyond the strict boundaries of their assigned work, and start thinking strategically and holistically about their contributions to their teams. Learning how and when to start doing so involves a steep learning curve.

This workshop is designed to help mid-level associates thrive during this key phase of their career, by giving participants:

  • a better understanding of what is expected of lawyers at different levels of seniority;

  • a clearer view of the role of the mid-level associate;

  • increased self-confidence, particularly during meetings;

  • an improved ability to analyse and adapt to team dynamics;

  • a reduction in stress as a result of the knowledge gained during the workshop; and

  • increased motivation to make substantive contributions to strategic discussions.

The workshop is demanding and interactive; participants are challenged to speak up and think critically about topics presented during the workshop, both individually and in small groups.

They leave armed with a better understanding of how they fit in with their teams, how they can best deploy their strengths (and how to assess when it is best to step back and let others take the floor), and what areas they need to improve upon in order to respond to their firm’s needs.

Excellence doesn’t happen by accident
